How do I pay duty and taxes?

Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) assesses duty and taxes on international packages arriving in Canada. Canada Post collects these fees on behalf of the Government of Canada.

There is a $9.95 handling fee included in the amount owing. This fee is in line with the government’s efforts to help recover costs from those who benefit from these services and is similar to arrangements in other countries.

Payment options

Paying online

Track your item on canadapost.ca/track or on the Canada Post mobile app. If you are presented with the option to pay online, click the "Pay" button.

Follow the instructions to complete a secure online payment using a credit card or Apple Pay/Google Pay (on the Canada Post mobile app only).

Wait for an email confirmation that includes a proof of payment, number and barcode.

Show this number and barcode as proof of payment if our delivery agent asks for it when your package arrives.

Delivery after paying online

When you pay duty and taxes online and your package doesn’t need a signature, the delivery agent will try to deliver the item to your usual delivery location. The delivery agent will also take into consideration your delivery preference (for example, leave at the front door) if provided. Learn how to set up a delivery preference.

The window of time to pay for duty and taxes online can be limited. To avoid missing the opportunity, we encourage you to sign up for notifications of duty and taxes owing on packages coming to you.
